Debi Scissorhands Part 3

If you haven't read the first post regarding my mother of the groom dress for Venti's wedding in October, you can read it HERE.   You can also read PART 1 and PART 2. I put the pictures on in black and white because I don't want you to see the finished product until its done!

My appointment with Debi Scissorhands on Thursday went very well!  When I got there she whisked me into her spare room that she uses for alterations. My dress hung on the door jam and she said, "put it on and let me know when you are ready"...and out the door she went before I could even turn around! I quickly changed and couldn't wait to slip on the dress to see what progress has been done so far! I stepped into the gown and already I could tell that it was looking exactly the way that I wanted it to!

I called for Debi to come back in the room and she re-appeared immediately. I couldn't get the zipper to zip so she came around to the back and zipped me up. I said that it felt tight under my boobs. Debi then asked, "where are you at in your monthly cycle?" "Huh?" I said. "Where are you in your monthly cycle?" I'm thinking what in the world does that have to do with it being tight under my boobs! I said, "not for another 2 weeks" (and now you all know when I will be getting my period!), "but what does that have to do with it being tight under my boobs?" Debi said, "if you are getting your monthly cycle soon then that would explain the tightness....and will you be close to your cycle around the wedding date?" I said, "yes I believe so" (oh boy I'll have to look for a purse that's big enough to carry lipstick and tampons! I wanted one of those cute little clutch purses and now I may have to rethink that!)
Ok it is not tight because I'm 2 weeks from getting my period, so it must be that I've gained a couple of pounds! I wouldn't have bloating under my boobs! My waist is way below that!
I said ok never mind that (I won't eat for 3 weeks before the wedding), the cleavage was still pinned and hadn't been sewn yet, the hem was still pinned and she got down and carefully and went the whole way around and precisely place each pin carefully along the hem.
As for the back of the dress, she removed all the ruffles and re-sewed it.  It doesn't look anything like it did before and I think it turned out great!
When Debi was done placing every last pin she said, "off you go...get changed and let me know when you are ready!"  I carefully took the dress off and re-hung it on the door jam.

Debi came back into the room and said that she would call me in a couple of weeks.  I thanked her and she ushered me to the door.  I glanced back one more time as I walked down the steps to see the tiny woman that I had only met twice and yet trusted immensely.

Debi Scissorhands Part 2

Tonight I get to go back to Debi Scissorhands to try on my dress and I get to see what magic Debi was able to do with the dress! If you missed part 1 you can read it HERE. I am anxious to see the dress and so I'm very excited about it! I'm going to have Joe come along and take pictures but not too many pictures because I don't want you guys to see the dress until the Wedding! I will do a post on the dress probably on Saturday because tomorrow is Follow Friday! So please check back then for the update! Wish me luck!!

Thanks for all the advice you gave me yesterday regarding Tall!  You were all very helpful and yes I try to have a sense of humor about the whole thing like the list of 20 things but even though its a hard thing to imagine, it is reality....and that's why its hard to comprehend.  We don't ever want to imagine our kids having sex....the same way they probably can't imagine us having sex either!  I am glad the line of communication are open and I plan to keep it that way. The single most important thing when talking to your son/daughter about sex is to link the subject to marriage and family and to love and commitment in a clear and positive way.

I learned something about Tall.  I learned that he was no longer my little   boy, but was rather a young man with morals, values and intellect, trying to navigate his way through the matrix of life.

So onward we go into the unknown, ever evolving, magical blessing known as parenthood. I wouldn’t rather be doing anything else right now!!

Look what I found...

Tall leaves his dirty clothes on the floor of his room...even though the hamper is like a couple of steps from his door.  I have told him 100 times about it but I still seem to find the endless pile of clothes on his floor.

So last night I was picking up a couple of pairs of his shorts when one of them "crinkled"......

Yes...crinkled....

I reached inside the one pocket....

And I found this....

What!!!???

I almost fell over!  He has had a girlfriend for a couple of months but there is no way my 17 year old son would need a condom!!  17 year olds don't have sex...do they???

Then I started thinking that maybe he was using it for other purposes and I came up with 20 possible suggestions:

1. Hair tie
2. Slip 'er over a payphone to avoid "NASTY" germs
3. Bathing cap (if you stretch it in the right manner)
4. Neat travel case for your toothbrush
5. An emergency air-sickness bag
6. Put them on soda cans to keep the fizz in when you're not drinking it.
7. Travel size shampoo and conditioner holders
8. A turkey baster
9. Keep your hot dog juicy in the microwave
10. Latex toe warmers
11. Stuff, and use to stop drafts under doors
12. Fill with rocks and use to as a weapon in a crisis situation
13. Makeshift sandbags in the event of a flood
14. To keep candles dry when camping
15. Build your own incredible "Water Weenies"
16. Golf club cozy
17. A way to save that half-eaten banana
18. Change purse
19. Cake frosting dispenser
20. For those long car trips that dad hates to stop for potty breaks

Yes...one of those has to be the reason that wrapper was in his pocket!!

But then my curiosity got the best of me and I went investigating in his room.

It didn't take me but 5 minutes.

And then I found these:
Did he have that many half eaten bananas?  Water balloons?  Was he decorating a cake?

Why were they all opened and put back in their package??

Well I was going to find out!!

So being the Mom that I am, I decided to lay the Fire and Ice wrapper on my bed beside Ozzie (cat)....I waited until Tall was walking by my room and said, "Awww come see Ozzie"....so Tall comes in and pets Ozzie and I said, "look at Ozzie.....really look at Ozzie"....well his eyes finally focus on the wrapper and I think I actually saw beads of sweat pop out of his forehead.

Tall:  "Ummmm ohhhh"
Me:  What is that for?  Are you having sex??
Tall:  We only did it twice!
Me:  Twice?? Where??
Tall:  Once here and once at her house!
Me:  Here?  Where?
Tall: In the basement!
Me:  In the basement?  What if someone came down?  Like Short!
Tall: Ummmm I don't know!
Me:  Ugh!  Well I do appreciate you using birth control but a condom doesn't mean she won't get pregnant and your too young to have sex!  Is she on birth control?
Tall: No...her Mom won't let her!
Me:  Omg...yeah she won't let her because you two shouldn't be having sex!!
Tall: I'm actually glad you found it because I wanted you to know!
Me:  Well then you should have told me!  I'd rather you tell me then to find them!
Tall: Sorry!
Me:  So why was there so many and why were they put back in their wrappers?
Tall: Ummmm well I was practicing!
Me:  Omg...what kind of response do I say to that??
Tall: Well I didn't want to look like I didn't know how to use them, so I was practicing!
Me:  Has she had sex before?  Because I know you haven't!
Tall: She had sex with 2 other guys and no I haven't had sex before!
Me:  2 other guys!  Slut!! (I didn't say that but I wanted to)....omg....
Tall: Its fine Mother....its not like we do it all the time!
Me:  Well now you might not be but 2 times turns into more time and more times.....
Tall: I'm so glad we had this talk!
Me:  I'm not...I'm freaked out!
Tall: Can I throw those away now?  I didn't want you to find them in the trash.
Me:  Oh so you'd rather me find them buried in your closet?
Tall: Oh like you wouldn't have freaked out if you found them in the trash?
Me:  Of course I would but I wish you would have just talked to me...I thought you knew that!
Tall: Well I wasn't sure...now I know...thanks Mother!
Me:  Mother?  What happened to Mom??

Out the door he went.  Happy as can be.

Me?  I'm left trying to process what just happened.

Life was so much easier when they were little and played with their matchbox and instead of trojan boxes!

Give me strength! And suggestions...what do you do? You can't prevent your kids from having sex! Or can you....

Tuesday Beauty Tips!! Lighten Hair Naturally!

I had a request from my good friend Queen over at Relationship Rant to do a post on lighting hair naturally! Here you go Queen!

It is estimated that two out of every five American women color their hair, so there are no shortage of people who can benefit from utilizing more natural methods of hair color.

For Natural Blondes:

Lemon juice is by far the most popular method for lightening hair at home. Beware of commercial lighteners that claim to use lemon juice; they are often strong chemical products in disguise with very little lemon juice inside the bottle. Lemon juice in itself is strongly acidic, so diluting it will keep it from damaging your hair. It should be mixed with at least an equal amount of water, more if your hair is already damaged or if you are concerned with graying.

Olive oil contains lightening agents in addition to its undeniable ability to give hair a certain softness and sheen. It's excellent for counteracting any drying effects lemon juice may have on your hair. Mix a tablespoon or two of olive oil in a cup of water with one tablespoon of pure lemon juice. Massage mixture into damp hair.  You can also use a spray bottle or comb through for more of a highlighting effect.  Lemon juice by itself will not lighten the hair. Lemon juice AND the ultraviolet rays of the sun will lighten your hair.  For best results sit in the sun until hair is dried.  Rinse well; two shampoos may be required to completely remove the olive oil.  You may have to try this method a number of times to achieve the desired result.

Use dried marigolds:
Put 1 cup of water, 1 cup of apple cider vinegar, and some dried marigold flowers in a pot and bring it to a boil. Strain out the flowers and let the liquid cool completely. Put it into a spray bottle, spritz it on dry hair, massage it into the scalp, and let the hair air-dry. Highlights appear in under an hour.

Another method is to steep five chamomile tea bags in boiling water. When the tea is completely cool, spray it on your hair, comb it through, and sit in the sun for about 30 minutes to bring out natural highlights.

For Natural Redheads:

Follow the same brewed tea method if you’re a redhead, except use cherry or blackberry tea. A can of beet juice mixed with a little water will give redheads highlights, too.

Give dark hair a cup of coffee

If you have brown hair, make a pot of extra-strong coffee. Let it cool completely. Pour the cold coffee into a spray bottle, and spritz it all over your hair. Sit in the sun for about half an hour. This won’t lighten your overall color, but it will brighten your natural highlights.

Short Story Saturday...

It's wise to remember how easily email -- this wonderful technology -- can be misused, sometimes unintentionally, with serious consequences.

An Illinois man who left the snow-filled streets of Chicago for a vacation in Florida. His wife was on a business trip and was planning to meet him there the next day. When he reached his hotel, he decided to send his wife a quick email.

Unfortunately, when typing her address, he missed one letter, and his note was directed instead to an elderly preacher's wife whose husband had passed away only the day before. When the grieving widow checked her email, she took one look at the monitor, let out a piercing scream, and fell to the floor in a dead faint.

At the sound, her family rushed into the room and saw this note on the screen:

Dearest Wife,
Just got checked in. Everything prepared for your arrival tomorrow.

P.S. Sure is hot down here.

Have a wonderful Saturday everyone!  I will be spending the day catching up on cleaning, grocery shopping and then relaxing at the pool!  See you tomorrow when I will post the  Meet Me On Monday questions!

HAVE FUN!

If you don't have anything nice to say.....

Thank you all for your words of encouragement about my job! Yesterday was my first "real" day and I was able to sit a couple of times throughout the day which did help! I will give it some time as I don't want to make a decision right away.   I was able to read some of your lovely blogs last night and that sure did make my week! I was so delighted to see that I got two lovely awards!
Thank you VERY much to RO MAGNOLIA at Soft Winds and Roses and ROBIN at Your Daily Dose!!

When I started blogging I had no idea the kind of people that I would meet and the friends that I would make.  I feel so fortunate to have you guys as friends and I don't take our friendship lightly.  I am here for you should you need anything and I know that I can count on any of you for advice, support, pep talks....just about anything!!

When I visit my blogging friends I always leave a comment.  And that comment is always positive and I try to be supportive as any friend should be!  I receive lots of comments as well which I love and read every single one of them....even the bad ones....yes...the bad ones.  I have only received 2 negative comments so far.  If you missed the first one, you can read it HERE.

So yesterday I receive this comment:

You may want to correct your "About Me" –the term is "used to" not "use to."  Just putting that out.

Who does that?  Ok so my grammar isn't correct but it is MY blog and if I want to say "use to" then shouldn't I be able to without having someone correct me?  I would NEVER ever tell someone that they aren't using the correct grammar!  This comment wasn't even from one of my friends and so I am disregarding it!

I am here to be your friend and am loving the friendship in return. I don't like negativity and to me I have the saying that if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all!

And you know what?

"I am living on the land that my Grandfather use to have a working dairy farm for more then 50 years."

And I'm proud of it!

And so it's begun...

I decided to accept my new job offer and I started training on Monday, so for the last 2 days I have been traveling to the home office which is 1 1/2 hours away which makes for a long day!  Plus I haven't given notice to my other job yet because I had made prior commitments before accepting this position.  If you missed this post, you can see it HERE.....and boy oh boy is it a HUGE difference!  I have to stand for 8 hours which I have never done before and I am really having a tough time!  So much so that I don't know if I can do it or not!  I heard that it takes awhile to get use to standing but then I heard that some people cannot do it and I seriously don't know if I can!  I like the job so far...except for the standing and I don't know how to get past that!  I have on the proper shoes and even have compression socks and yet I feel like I've been hit by a truck!  Its not just my feet, its my legs, back, neck....oh my....I feel old!   I guess I have to give it time and see if I can do it or not!  If you have any pointers, please let me know!!

I am also having a rough time with being away from home for so long.  I miss doing the things that I did before.  Joe is a huge help and does alot of the cleaning, etc. but there are still things that I do and I'm not able to!  Plus I miss the kids...and Joe...and the cats!!  Oh boy....dilemma, dilemma!   Tomorrow I actually start the job and don't have to travel because its only about 8 minutes from my house.  I will let you all know how it goes!

I do apologize if I haven't visiting your blog in the last couple of days!  I will try and catch up with everyone later tonight!!

Tuesday Beauty Tips!! Ten Beauty Products From Your Kitchen!!

How many times have you been swayed by one luxurious-sounding ingredient in a personal care product?  I only recently began asking myself, “why not go straight to the source?”  If those ingredients are so good for my skin, why purchase something that is 99% filler and only 1% good stuff?  You may be surprised to find that your kitchen is chock full of secret beauty ingredients that are simple to use and as good as, if not better than, the store bought version!

  • Olive Oil: Eye Make-Up Remover
Keep a small jar in your medicine cabinet.  Dab a little onto a damp cotton ball and watch your eye makeup melt right off.  It also moisturizes the delicate skin around your eyes and nourishes your lashes.  And it doesn’t sting.
  • Coconut Oil: Moisturizer and Stretch Mark Cream
Use coconut oil on your belly and thighs throughout your pregnancy to prevent stretch marks!  It’s also excellent on hands and feet, especially with cotton gloves or socks worn overnight.
  • Salt and Sugar: Hand and Foot Exfoliator
Salt and sugar are too strong for the delicate skin on your face, but make an excellent scrub for hardworking hands and feet.  Mix a little with some olive oil or honey and keep a jar handy for a quick treatment.
  • Honey: Skin and Hair Condiditioner
Stored in a squeeze bottle in your shower, honey makes a wonderful, moisture-rich conditioner.  Its humectant properties draw moisture into your hair.  And far from being a sticky mess it rinses out easily and leaves hair soft.
  • Eggs: Protein Hair Mask
Eggs are high in protein and make an excellent mask for damaged hair.  Whip up the eggs a bit, adding a tablespoon or two of olive oil and spread onto damp hair.  You may want to mix it in a blender to completely emulsify the oil.  Spread it onto your hair, wrap it in a warm towel, relax for ten to twenty minutes while it works its magic, then shampoo as you normally would.  A once a week treatment will help protect oft-styled hair.
  • Milk: Skin Softener
Cleopatra was rumored to bathe in milk for its beauty-enhancing properties.  If you don’t have a whole tub full of milk to bathe in, simply patting some onto your face, letting it dry and then rinsing it off with warm water will give you noticeably softer skin.
  • Lemon Juice: Nail Whitener
My mom was always dipping her fingers in a little basin of lemon juice to remove the stains that would accrue from a day of cooking and cleaning.
  • Vinegar: Shiny Hair Rinse
1 tablespoon in a cup of water will give you a great hair rinse that removes product buildup and makes your hair shaft smother, resulting in shinier hair.  You can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil for a pleasant scent.
  • Avocado: Nourishing Skin Mask
Face masks containing avocado line grocery store shelves.  Simply mashing up an avocado and letting it sit on your face will give you all the nutrients and moisture, plus enzymes, but minus weird fillers and chemicals.  Mixing it in the blender with a little water or olive oil will give you an easier-to-spread consistency.
  • Cornmeal: Facial Exfoliator
You can mix fine to medium ground cornmeal into a base of honey, oil, yogurt or mashed fruit for a gentle, but effective facial scrub that can be used on a daily basis.

In addition to the cost-saving benefit of using ingredients you already have in place of personal care products, there is the peace of mind that comes from knowing exactly what you’re putting on your skin.  You’ll likely find that these “products” work even better than their store-bought counterparts and leave your skin and hair feeling more nourished and balanced!

Debi Scissorhands

Yesterday was a day full of wedding stuff!  Venti and Mocha are home for the weekend and made plans to check a lot of things off the list of many things that needed done for the wedding.

At 10am I had an appointment with a seamstress to see if she could turn my dress into what I wanted it to look like.  I had posted an add on craigslist with pictures of the dress and a description of what I wanted done to it.   If you missed that post, you can read it HERE.   I had never met this lady and so when I got there I pulled up in front of her dilapidated apartment building and climbed the steps to her 3rd floor apartment.  The door opened and there stood this petite little woman who graciously welcomed me into her home and shakes my hand and introduces herself as "Debi."  She ushered me across the hallway and into a spare room that had a naked mannequin, an antique chair that was half upholster and a floor length mirror.  She shut all the blinds and said, "see you in a couple of minutes"....so I put the dress on and stood there a couple of minutes gazing around at the bare room.  As quickly as she disappeared she reappeared back into the room. "Oh you look beautiful", she said....."thank you".

She knew what I wanted done to the dress and so she starts at the cleavage where I said that I thought it was too low and she said, "yes..you don't want to look like a houche momma!"   She said, "I have an idea"....she then takes her scissors, goes to the back of the dress and starts cutting a piece of fabric!
She then disappears into another room and I'm left standing there with a hole cut out of my dress!  She returned in like 10 seconds with the piece of fabric and had it sewn into an accordion, grabbed 2 pins and transformed the cleavage into looking like the dress was made that way!  "Amazing" I said!

Next she whips me around so that I'm turned sideways at the mirror.  She said, "you don't want the ruffles right?"......"ummm no I said", so she grabbed her scissors that I swear turned into an even bigger pair of scissors and starts cutting the ruffles off like she was cutting her hedges outside!  Yikes I thought!  What is she doing to my dress!!
While watching her in the mirror all I could think of was Edward Scissorhands and it was at that moment that I think my armpits started to sweat and not because I was on the 3rd floor and it was 90 degress outside!  Here I was with this $400 dress, standing in a bare room in a 3rd floor apartment of someone that I don't even know and she has these gigantic pair of scissors cutting away at my dress!!

She then lifts up the back of the dress where it had some tulle to make the dress puff out more....she said, "you don't want this do you?"...."ummm no I said", but with even more hesitation.  She grabs the tulle in the middle and yank!....out it goes!   She turns me this way...and that way....and cuts and pins and when I turn one way I see a pile of my lovely fabric on the dirt stained carpet and when I turn another way I look at the tulle dancing on the floor in the path of the fan.  "Am I going to faint?".....take a deep breath....

Maybe 10 minutes later she says "there...how's that?"  I turn to look in the mirror and the dress was amazingly transformed already!  Wow I said.....she chuckled and said, "I love my job"....she said it needs re-sewn in the back and the ruffles cleaned up.  I twirled around and really couldn't believe what Debi Scissorhands had done to the dress in that short amount of time.  She said you can get changed now and disappeared into another room.  She popped back in and we made an appointment for July 29th for me to come back and try it on.  She said she would have it steamed and ready.  She didn't mention yet how much it was going to cost so I said, "how do you want to do the payment?  Do you want half now and half later?"  She said, "you don't have to", and I said, "well I would want half if I were you" and she said, "well I have your dress though" and winked at me....hmmm.  So she said it would be $60 total and I gave her $30 cash.  No receipt.  Yes, I'm too trusting!

She bustled me out the door and I sat in the car pondering what had just taken place.  I didn't have a lot of time to think about it because I had to meet Venti and Mocha at the caterers.  I got there and Mocha's Mom was there too.  We went over the menu and were brought a plate of chicken piccata to try.  It was very good and so they finalized the menu and off we left to the bridal shop where Mocha and myself were meeting my cousin and her little girl Talia to try on flower girl dresses.  We found the perfect one and Talia looked so cute!

Later for dinner Joe and I went out for date night!  We had their specialty which was BBQ ribs, BBQ, Hot Wings and Fries.  It was a plate for 2 which we shared and could have shared with 2 other people because it was so large!  We brought half of it home, but boy was it good!

We will be spending the day at the pool today with Venti and Mocha!  Hope everyone has a fantastic Saturday!  I will post the Meet Me On Monday questions tomorrow evening so you can post them Monday morning!

How do you know?

.....that you are making the right decision? What do you base your decision making on? Yes...I'm having second thoughts...about the job. I was fine and happy about my decision until Joe was leaving for work last night and I was kissing him goodbye and I always tear up when he leaves because I miss him so much (you would think that after 30 years of being together that I would be kicking him out the door instead right?)..and Joe said, "we have to enjoy this week because you start your job next week and we won't see each other very much"....

That got me thinking. The job that I have now I have 100% flexibility...I work whenever I want. I am home ALOT...and I'm salaried so I don't even have to worry about how many hours I work. My boss lives 2 hours away and I hardly ever report in!

So what is there not to like?

I hate it.

I really hate the job.

So much that when my cell phone rings and I see its work related I get all tensed up.

So is it worth it for all the perks to put up with a job that you hate?

My new job will be working M-F 8:30am-5pm......ZERO flexibility + hourly wage.

But I think I will like the job.

I think.

Not sure...but I think.

So is it worth giving up all that just because you hate it?

The flexibility is the thing that bothers me the most.

I LOVE being home. I wish I could be a SAHM (stay at home mom) or even a WAHM (work at home mom)...but I can't...we need my paycheck.

I wish I could sell things on Etsy and make that my career!

I just don't know what to do. I don't want to regret leaving..but then if I pass up this opportunity I might regret that too.

So how do you know??
